Awards:

Lowell Thomas Award silver from the Society of American Travel Writers in 2013 for “Where Time Stood Still,” a story on Myanmar for Private Clubs magazine. The judges called it, “outstanding writing, combining history, culture and sightseeing.”

I have won several first places prizes in the annual writing competition held by the North American Travel Journalists Association, beginning in 2001 with Best Travel Writing for “Between the Virgins” in the Chicago Tribune. Others include a gold for “Treasure Islands,” the Nov. 2012 cover story of Budget Travel.

NATJA 2014 Golds went to “Ghost Towns, Puffins and Unspoiled Views,” a story on Newfoundland’s rebounding Bonavista Peninsula published in the New York Times, and “Economic Booster,” the story behind the architecturally stunning and community-supporting Fogo Island Inn, also in Newfoundland. Proving I can write about more than Maritime Provinces, bronze went to “How to Sport Like an Irishman” in Virtuoso Life.

NATJA Best Travel Writing for “In Texas, Monarchs Flutter and Admirals Alight,” in the New York Times, 2007
